AMIENS SOLDIER FARMER MEMORIAL

WORLD WAR 1 RETURNED SOLDIER FARMER MEMORIAL.

Situated in the Amiens Legacy Centre in Amiens near Stanthorpe, the memorial consists of a 3m high granite relief sculpture representing a settler family. The enormous effort of land clearance is highlighted by the canopy of overpowering trees. The central element is the soldier’s wife who holds a plant against her womb with her left hand while her right hand extends out cautioning a young adventurous son precariously balanced on branch while blessing the newly planted fruit tree.

THE ROCK

During the construction of a new carpark in Rogers Street Stanthorpe, a large granite boulder emerged just below the surface during preparation of the site.

It turned out to be the basis of a highly acclaimed sculpture called ‘THE ROCK’. Designed by trabarts and crafted by sculptors Gabriele Trabucco and Richard Pfeiffer. The egret surmounting the sculpture was forged by local, highly renowned blacksmith Adrian Hobba. The sculpture features many examples of flora and fauna of The Granite Belt which has become a challenge of discovery for young and old.

A commemorative sculpture was commissioned for the occasion of the 150th anniversary of St Joseph’s Primary school Kangaroo Point,

The brief required a forgrounding of historical development from the early founding years by St Mary Mackillop and Catherine Mcauley to the present.

18 sandstone tablets 400x400mm tell the story from left to right.

A subtle outline of a dove, signifying the presence of the holy spirit connects the diverse elements of the sculpture.

INTERGRATION

A very old Moreton Bay fig tree in Mollison Street West End near the Brisbane CBD was secretly poisoned causing much anger/disappointment to the locals.

Several years later it was decided to create a memorial to what had become a central icon over the decades. A central steel structure referencing the sinuous nature of the original tree supported the outer hard shells of the tree’s remains. The steel bars spring skyward symbolising rebirth.

The modern steel combined with the ancient wood provides a cautionary statement to developers suggesting that rampant urban expansion must not sacrifice the established visual core of a community.

THE DANCER

This granite sculpture is part of a cluster of sculptures located in Weeroona park which is the location for a range of community events in Stanthorpe. The dancer, accompanied by a drummer (See next section) sets the scene of celebration.

CREEK MUSIC

this piece is a 2d sculpture cut from coreten steel.

It consists a four-sided screen enclosing a power outlet box.

The predominant theme, like the dancer is celebration. Three of the four sides feature a couple at different stages of a flamboyant dance.

In autumn, the brown leaves provide a spectacular setting for the coreten rusted metal.
